Persona Curada is pleased to announce Ai Miz Yu, a group show with artists Marisabel Arias (Peru), Ingrid Pumayalla (Peru, 1989) and Sofía Salazar Rosales (Ecuador, 1999) curated by Gisselle Giron for The Others art fair. Gisselle Giron’s exhibition proposal was one of the winning projects for the art fair’s open call for curators under 30, launched earlier this year. The show brings together fragments of complex installations by artists Marisabel Arias, Ingrid Pumayalla and Sofia Salazar. Their ceramics, ready-made objects and photography, offer a nuanced insight into the dynamics of displacement through the creation of rituals which use a complex material language of objects as indexes of affection.

Ai Miz Yu is the phonetic version in Spanish writing of the English phrase “I miss you”. This eponymous phrase in English-speaking media, as many other phrases, brands and famous fictional characters, have homophones counterparts in different contexts. Sometimes these homophones are considered at best, mistranslations and at worst, copies of their “English” original counterparts. The informal commercial activities which inform small-scale trade businesses in Latin America have produced an array of “fake” originals, mistranslations of famous brands behind the largest multinational corporations, like Nike, Adidas, Coca-Cola, etc. They are originals because, most of the time, the object’s form is usually different from the array of objects of the “original” product they refer to. In any way, they live in constant tension with its counterpart and respond to an economy of tense contradictions.

Ai Miz Yu is a love letter to those objects which unravel under displacement, revealing to us powerful stories of cariño and tenderness, as well as violence and struggle.
